| The
festivities were over, we were into 2009 and there was an earlybird
team turning up every morning at 8am in Ballyvary to admit stray
and feral cats
! An overnight group had caught them out
on farms and brought them in to our two veterinary students
here from UCD college in the early hours of the day.
The week had been put aside as our
charity cat neutering week; we were able to do it with a group
of dedicated helpers who arranged how many cats, who was to
trap them and the transport down to the clinic where the students
took over. Each cat was transferred and weighed to enable
the correct calculation of anaesthetic and painkillers. The
cats were given their anaesthetic and then we could find out
if they were boys or girls! Sarah our fourth year veterinary
student operated on the girls and Sharon our third year veterinary
student operated on the boys! Every cat had antibiotics, painkillers
and a dose against fleas and worming before they were woken
up again.
The team did great work and managed
to operate on 12 females on one of the days which was sterling
work.
Our thanks goes out to the two students
Sarah and Sharon and also Maureen of the Mayo Cat Rescue who
organized our team outside the clinic!
